Sziget Festival won the Best European Major Festival title at the European Festival
Awards. A joint effort of the festival’s organizing team and the votes of a devoted
fan base in over 60 countries resulted in the best possible news to start up the year.
The prize giving ceremony of the 2011 European Festival Awards took place on 11 January in
Groningen, The Netherlands. Music industry professionals and journalists from all over the old
continent gathered to celebrate the winners of the prestigious award, crowning Sziget Festival
as the best of Europe’s greatest parties.
This year will see the 20th edition of the event, which is renowned as one of the biggest and
most international festivals of the world, a popular meeting point for fans from all corners of the
globe. Sziget represents the culture of Hungary and the CEE region, while its international lineup
also qualifies it as a main event in the international agenda. The festival is often cited by
journalists as remarkably colorful, mainly referring to its multi-genre, multi-art program structure
and the huge number of program venues. Besides international stars on its main stages, the
event also hosts many civil society initiatives and stands up for universal values like human
rights, ethnic, sexual, or social justice.
In addition to earning the first prize of the major festivals, Sziget was placed among the top five
in the category based on performing musician’s preference. “We are honored that not only the
audience, the profession, but the artists also appreciate our efforts”- emphasized Sziget’s
founder and chief organizer, Károly Gerendai.
